Access by mucosa punching presents no problems.
But a small opening of a mucoperiostal flap has considerable benefits:

• The periodontium of the adjacent teeth can be examined and, if need be, cleaned.
• The surface of the ridge can be smoothed.
• A thick submucosa can be thinned.
